Discovering Your Dosha
In the ancient practice of Ayurveda, the first step toward lasting wellness is not a change in diet or a new exercise routine—it’s a journey of self-discovery. By uncovering your unique mind-body type, or dosha, you unlock the secrets to living in harmony with your true nature.
FOUNDATIONS

What is a dosha?
The foundation of Ayurveda lies in the five great elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. The doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are biological energies formed from these elements that govern all of our physical and mental processes. We are all born with a unique combination of these three energies, with one or two typically being dominant.
Understanding your dominant dosha, or your prakriti, is the key to creating a personalized wellness plan. It’s a roadmap that explains why you are the way you are and guides you toward habits that support your best health.
Meet the three doshas
Vata (Space and Air)
Vata is the energy of movement, creativity, and change.
When in balance: You are quick-witted, creative, and full of vitality. You learn quickly and have a lively, enthusiastic spirit.
When out of balance: You may experience anxiety, dryness, constipation, or inconsistent energy levels. Your mind can feel scattered and restless.
Vata-soothing tips: Emphasize grounding routines, warm and nourishing foods, and calming practices like slow yoga and meditation.
Pitta (Fire and Water)
Pitta is the energy of metabolism, transformation, and digestion.
When in balance: You are intelligent, ambitious, and focused. Your digestion is strong, and you possess a natural leadership quality.
When out of balance: You may experience irritability, inflammation, and perfectionist tendencies. Digestive issues like heartburn are common when your inner fire burns too hot.
Pitta-soothing tips: Incorporate cooling foods and activities, embrace a moderate pace, and make time to relax and release tension.
Kapha (Earth and Water)
Kapha is the energy of structure, lubrication, and stability.
When in balance: You are calm, compassionate, and grounded. You have a strong physical constitution and are a pillar of stability for others.
When out of balance: You may experience sluggishness, weight gain, congestion, and feelings of lethargy or emotional heaviness.
Kapha-soothing tips: Stimulate your body and mind with invigorating exercise, light and warm foods, and practices that encourage movement and new experiences.
How to discover your dosha
While online quizzes can offer a fun, introductory glimpse into your dosha, a deeper understanding comes from a personal assessment. The most authentic way to find your true prakriti is through a consultation with a certified Ayurvedic practitioner. They can consider your unique physical and emotional traits, health history, and other factors to give you a complete picture.
Your dosha is your guide, not your label
Remember, discovering your dosha is not about putting yourself in a box. It’s about gaining an incredible tool for lifelong wellness. Think of your dosha as your body’s unique operating manual. When you know how it works best, you can choose foods, activities, and routines that keep you balanced, healthy, and happy.
